Bulky uplift in Glasgow and North Lanarkshire: council vs private collection

"Bulky uplift" (or "special uplift") is the Scottish council term for collecting large household items that don't fit in your bin: sofas, mattresses, white goods, furniture and the like. Both Glasgow City Council and North Lanarkshire Council offer it, and both charge for it. Here is how it compares with a private collection.

How the council bulky uplift works

• You book online or by phone and pay a fee per uplift for a set number of items.
• You're given a collection date, typically two to three weeks away at busy times.
• Items must be left outside — at the kerb, back court or bin store — by a set time on the day.
• Certain items are excluded or need a separate arrangement, and mixed general waste, garden waste, rubble and trade waste aren't covered.

When the council is the right choice

If you have one or two items, they're easy to get outside, and you're in no hurry, the council uplift is good value. Check the current fee on the Glasgow City Council or North Lanarkshire Council website before booking, as charges change.

When a private uplift is better

• You need it gone today or tomorrow, for example before a tenancy ends or a viewing.
• The items are upstairs, in a tenement close or in a garage, and you can't get them to the kerb.
• You have mixed waste: a pile of bags and boxes, garden waste, or leftovers from a renovation.
• You want proof of legal disposal — a waste transfer note — which matters for landlords and businesses.

Avoiding fly-tipping fines
